Google said on Oct. 29 that its Gemini app now lets users create, preview and edit files inside a chat. The update adds in‑place editing for PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, plain text and code. Users no longer need to leave the conversation to make changes.

Files can now be expanded to full screen, so users can type edits straight into them. Users can also highlight a passage and ask Gemini to rewrite it, or have Gemini refine the whole file on request.
PDF preview and editing work on both the web and mobile versions of Gemini. Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, TXT and code work on the web only. That means a phone user can edit a PDF but must use the web version to edit a spreadsheet.
The update builds on a feature from April, when Gemini could generate PDFs, Word and Excel files, and Google Workspace files from a prompt. Users could then download or export the file. The October change lets them revise it inside the chat. The April list also included .docx, .xlsx, .csv, LaTeX, plain text and Markdown.
