Apple has unveiled a 14-inch MacBook Pro with its new M6 chip, alongside a refreshed iMac. The laptop starts at $1,999 in the US and £1,999 in the UK, the same as the M5 model's price just before launch. Pre-orders open on October 28 in 35 countries, with deliveries and in-store availability starting on November 6. It looks much like its predecessor and comes in space black and silver.
The M6 has a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, and each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator to speed up AI work. Apple says it delivers up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster AI tasks than the M5, such as running a large language model locally. Its Neural Engine is up to 1.9 times faster. Apple also claims the M6 has the fastest CPU core in the world, based on its own tests. Compared with the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro from 2020, Apple claims up to 11 times faster graphics and 13 times faster AI performance.
Battery life reaches up to 24 hours, which Apple says is a record for a Mac. Performance stays the same on battery or plugged in. With a higher-wattage adapter, the laptop charges to 50% in around 30 minutes. It supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The ports are three Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, a headphone jack and MagSafe 3 charging, the same layout as before.
Display and peripherals
The Liquid Retina XDR display is unchanged. It offers up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Buyers can choose a nano-texture finish to cut glare. The laptop also has a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera and a six-speaker sound system.
The MacBook Pro ships with macOS 27, which brings Apple's AI-powered Siri to the Mac. It can search messages, emails and photos and perform actions across apps. The assistant is still in beta, supports six languages and has daily usage limits. The enclosure is made from 100% recycled aluminium, and the battery uses 100% recycled cobalt.
