Clayface opened to $24 million and topped the domestic box office. That was slightly below projections of $25 million to $30 million. Still, the film cost $44 million, less than most comic book movies. It may not be a profit machine, but it won't lose money either.

You Can See Everything, a documentary, took in $19.5 million the same weekend.

Clayface has a 75% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Supergirl, the previous film in the universe, has a 52% rotten rating.

The film's cost makes it cheaper than most comic book movies. It is the studio's second year of a mixed-bag revival under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Supergirl lost an estimated $80 million to $120 million, while Superman, which Gunn wrote and directed, earned $618.7 million globally.

DC will bring back some of its headliners. The Batman: Part II opens in 2028, and Gunn returns to Superman with Man of Tomorrow next summer.
