A Belgian rider, Jelle Verstaen, has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance covered on a single charge by an electric motorcycle. He rode a Zero DS from the French Alps to the Mediterranean coast, covering 436.5 km (271.2 miles). The achievement was verified by GPS and the Guinness World Records team.

Verstaen rode a standard Zero DS that was fitted with the optional Power Tank, which adds a 3.6‑kWh pack to the bike’s 15.6‑kWh battery, bringing total capacity to 19.2 kWh. The DS is normally rated for 155 miles of city range on its base battery. With the Power Tank the bike can pull more energy, but the record ride still pushed the limits of the 19.2‑kWh pack.

The route began high in the French Alps, near Les Claux in Vars, at an elevation of about 1,850 meters (6,070 feet). It wound down through winding roads, crossing mountain passes and passing through towns, before ending on the Mediterranean coast. The final 62 miles of the ride were completed in heavy rain.

Verstaen aimed for an average speed of about 32 mph, a deliberately slow pace to reduce aerodynamic drag and conserve battery power. He rode mostly at night, when traffic was light, which helped maintain a steady and efficient speed. The low speed was chosen because higher speeds would have increased energy consumption.

The new record of 271.2 miles surpassed the previous record of 193 miles (310.7 km) by more than 40 percent. The former record was set by a different electric motorcycle in a separate attempt. The new distance shows a significant jump over the last record set for an electric motorcycle.

While the route started at a high elevation and ended lower, meaning the rider had a net downhill gain, the journey also involved climbs and turns that required power. The slow target speed and nighttime riding helped maximize range, but they also mean the record does not reflect typical riding conditions. The record demonstrates the potential for long distance on electric motorcycles when conditions are optimized.

The achievement illustrates that a production electric motorcycle with less than 20 kWh of battery can travel more than 270 miles on a single charge under carefully controlled conditions. It shows the efficiency that can be achieved with a lightweight machine and careful riding, but it also highlights that typical highway speeds would reduce that distance. The record is a milestone that pushes the limits of what electric motorcycles can do.
