Xbox is testing a new way to pay for cloud gaming, called Cloud Playtime. Since October 21, Xbox Insiders without a Game Pass subscription have been able to buy prepaid hour packs that start at $3.99 for 10 hours. The company said the pricing is introductory launch pricing, and Cloud Playtime is set to roll out to more players in November.
Benefits of paid playtime
Each prepaid pack is a one‑time purchase that gives players an ad‑free experience, shorter wait times, and high‑quality streaming. The hours bought do not expire and stay on the account until they are used, unlike Game Pass hours that reset each month. The cost per hour falls as the pack gets larger: $0.40 per hour for the 10‑hour pack, $0.32 for 25 hours, and $0.24 for 50 hours.
Starting in November, Game Pass plans will move from unlimited cloud gaming to fixed monthly hour limits. The Ultimate tier will get 15 hours, Premium 10, and Essential 5. The 10‑hour paid pack, for example, is twice the monthly allowance of the Essential tier, and the 50‑hour pack covers more than three months of the Ultimate allowance. Xbox has not said whether subscribers will pay the same pack prices as Insiders.
Game Pass hour caps
Cloud Playtime does not include a game library; players use their hours to stream games they already own on supported devices. Xbox has not released a full list of eligible titles. The service also offers a free, ad‑supported cloud gaming option that will remain available alongside the paid packs. Xbox has pitched cloud streaming as a way for Xbox One owners to play Xbox Series X|S games without buying new hardware.
The test is limited to Insiders, and Xbox has not confirmed final prices for the full launch. The paid packs are expected to roll out to more players in November, at the same time the hour caps take effect. How the new pricing and limits will affect the broader player base remains to be seen.
