Waymo has secured a five billion dollar loan from lenders. This marks the first time the company raised money as debt. The Alphabet-owned firm had only used investment money for funding before.

Large financial organizations joined together to provide the capital. Blackstone, Pimco, and Sixth Street led the group of creditors involved. Goldman Sachs managed the banking side for the agreement.

Other major funds contributed to the total amount as well. Participants included Fidelity Management, Apollo, and Franklin Templeton among others. The cost of the loan was set above the standard market rate.

Leaders state this borrowing offers better financial stability for future plans. They want to strengthen their balance sheet against rising costs. Waymo views this step as a move toward a larger business scale.

Until now, growth relied on equity sales from outside investors. A previous round raised sixteen billion dollars at a high valuation. Alphabet keeps its position as the majority owner of the firm.

The borrowed cash will help expand service to new locations. Waymo currently serves fifteen cities across the United States so far. Las Vegas was recently named as one of these active markets.

International plans include launching services in other countries soon. Specific targets listed by the company include Munich and Singapore by late next decade. They are also testing operations in London and Tokyo at present.

Safety oversight is increasing as the fleet gets larger. Regulators launched a review of how the cars handle school areas. This follows reports on vehicle behavior during specific driving situations.

A report describes a car striking a child close to a campus. That incident caused minor injuries to the pedestrian involved. Federal investigators also looked into separate accidents with stopped buses earlier this year.

Engineers recently developed custom chips for use in these cars. The technology supports operations without human drivers behind the wheel. Waymo claims road safety is improving in areas where they operate.
