Volkswagen has advised owners of 2023 through 2026 ID.4 SUVs in the U.S. not to charge above 80 percent because of a fire risk. The new recall covers a total of 22,524 vehicles identified through assembly and production records. This is a voluntary action taken by the automaker after safety concerns were raised regarding the high-voltage batteries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report, specific charging profiles combined with a charge level over 80 percent may trigger thermal propagation. This term describes how heat can spread rapidly within the high-voltage battery during certain conditions. Volkswagen has not yet identified the root cause of this behavior.
On June 17, 2026, the company ordered a detailed study of its battery systems following earlier recalls. The Product Safety Committee reviewed preliminary findings on September 21 which linked charging patterns to thermal events. A final decision to recall the vehicles was made on September 23, 2026 after further analysis.
The investigation included a review of vehicle assembly records and available charging data from the affected population. Volkswagen identified 22 related claims in the U.S. between January 18, 2024, and August 7, 2026. These reports supported the decision to limit maximum charge levels as a safety precaution.
Affected owners will receive warning stickers for designated areas of their vehicles, advising them not to charge beyond 80 percent. Depending on the vehicle’s configuration and online connectivity, Volkswagen may also remotely or electronically limit the battery’s maximum charge level. These actions serve as a temporary precaution while the remedy is developed.
Volkswagen planned to notify dealers about the recall on October 6, 2026, while owner notifications are expected by November 27, 2026. No reimbursement plan will be offered because the affected vehicles remain within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period. Owners are asked to read their owner’s manual for important information until a fix is announced.
