The UK government announced the creation of the AI Biosecurity Lab, a world‑first organisation focused on using frontier AI to strengthen biosecurity. The lab will receive £100 million in government funding and up to £200 million in commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic, bringing the total package to £300 million. Its mission is to bring together AI and biological science talent to develop practical technical capabilities that improve the UK’s ability to understand, prevent, detect and respond to biological threats, especially those enabled by advances in AI. Initial work will focus on early detection of emerging threats and speeding the development of vaccines, treatments and other countermeasures.

Independent structure and partnerships

OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits, and give trusted access to its most capable relevant models through the Rosalind Biodefense programme. Anthropic will offer up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and dedicated technical support. The lab will also partner with Google DeepMind, whose scientists will work with the lab and look to provide trusted access to Gemini and specialised science models, and with Basecamp Research, a UK AI life‑sciences company that will provide its AI‑biology models and expertise to tackle priority biosecurity challenges.

The lab will operate as an independent, non‑profit organisation and will be part of the National AI Biosecurity Initiative. It will work closely with the UK Health Security Agency, the Animal and Plant Health Agency, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. A scientific advisory committee drawing on academia, industry and the third sector will support the lab, with further details to be announced. The lab is designed to establish the UK as the world leader in AI‑enabled biosecurity.

The launch, announced on 24 October 2026, comes as the government says advances in AI bring both unprecedented opportunities for scientific discovery and new biological risks. By harnessing AI to accelerate research, improve disease understanding and support countermeasure development, the lab seeks to strengthen resilience to a wide range of biological threats while managing the risks that increasingly capable AI systems could pose.
