Two Quantum Startups Raise Funds To Build Practical Computing Systems This Year

Major investment rounds for Oratomic and Universal Quantum highlight global competition in hardware scaling.

Two companies announced funding for quantum computers on October 8, 2026. Oratomic received $475 million while Universal Quantum took over $100 million. Both groups plan to build working machines that can handle large tasks.

The California firm called this a Series B round led by ARCH Venture Partners. Their valuation rose from $1.5 billion to $5.5 billion during the deal. Bezos Expeditions also joined the investor list for Oratomic.

Universal Quantum is a UK company based in the Sussex region. It raised money in a Series A round that marks the largest of its kind locally. DCVC and Firgun Ventures led the investment team.

Different reports list the headquarters location as either Brighton or Haywards Heath. The business remains focused on the UK market for now.

Both firms use trapped atoms or neutral atoms to store information. This state acts like a digital switch but can exist in two places at once. Scientists call this superposition in standard technical terms.

Universal Quantum connects these small chips to create larger units. A specific link system joins them at high speed for error control. The company says this helps stop mistakes from noise or heat.

Oratomic argues it can achieve similar results with fewer quantum bits. Estimates suggest they might only need 10,000 bits for useful work. This contrasts with industry standards that often look for one million.

Expansion plans include building a research center in Singapore soon. Universal Quantum also operates hubs in Hamburg, the US and Japan. German government contracts support their development of aerospace tools.

The total value of the contract is reported as around €67 million or €68 million by different sources. This financial agreement proves demand for their error correction technology early on.

Market experts expect the sector to be worth $100 billion yearly by 2035. Current applications target medicine and finance alongside industrial problems. The goal is to lower costs so commercial use becomes real.

Dr. Sebastian Weidt stated that investors back their path to scale. He noted that the team has a long history of research before this funding round. They want to move beyond theoretical experiments into useful hardware.
