Toyota recalls 228,000 Sienna hybrids over seat back risk

The recall covers 228,367 Sienna hybrids from 2022‑2026 after engineers found that seat belt pretensioners could cause second‑row seat backs to unlock in a frontal collision.

Toyota is recalling 228,367 seven‑passenger Sienna hybrids from model years 2022 to 2026, built between September 16, 2021, and July 20, 2026. Seat belt pretensioners can generate forces that unlock the second‑row seat backs in a frontal collision, potentially raising the risk of injury. Toyota says the seat back could move during a crash, which may keep the belt from restraining occupants properly.

Toyota first saw the problem in prototype sled tests in January 2025, when a modified seat's recliner mechanism disengaged. It then ran dozens of sled and full‑scale crash tests through October 2026, which confirmed the failure. As of October 12, Toyota had no field technical reports or warranty claims for the condition in the US. The investigation also included recovering second‑row seat assemblies from the field to see how the recliners had held up.

For most vehicles, dealers will install updated Supplemental Restraint System software to recalibrate pretensioner timing at no charge. About 200 Mobility‑as‑a‑Service models will get new second‑row seat backs with a redesigned recliner mechanism. The recall uses internal numbers 26TB24 and 26TA24.

Toyota will begin mailing notification letters to owners on December 7, 2026. Owners can call 1‑800‑331‑4331 and quote the recall numbers.
