TikTok has permanently shut down the promotional account for Alex Gibney’s documentary “Musk,” which chronicles the life of Elon Musk, citing severe violations of its political‑policy rules. The account had more than 10,000 followers and posted short clips promoting the film, even urging viewers to see it in theaters before the shutdown. Bleecker Street, the film’s distributor, was notified of the decision just as the movie opened across North America.

Platform responses

Meta and Google/YouTube initially rejected paid ads for the film’s trailer, later reversing those decisions and blaming the rejections on errors. X, owned by Musk, has refused to carry any advertising for the documentary. TikTok has not publicly commented on the specific posts that triggered the ban.

The film premiered in a limited preview before rolling out to nearly 500 screens nationwide. It is slated to stream on HBO next year, and its international distributor Universal has confirmed that it is moving forward with the release.

TikTok’s U.S. operations are partly owned by Oracle co‑founder Larry Ellison, whose stake in the platform overlaps with the film’s content. The platform’s policy distinguishes “political TikTok accounts” into categories such as Government, Politician, and Political Party, applying stricter rules and removing content that crosses a severe‑harm threshold.

Bleecker Street is appealing the permanent ban in hopes of restoring access to TikTok’s audience during the film’s nationwide theatrical push, a loss that has tightened the distributor’s marketing efforts.
