Tesla Roadster Reservations Warn of Delivery Uncertainty

Tesla’s new Roadster reservation agreement says the vehicle may never be delivered, leaving buyers with a deposit but no guarantee.

Tesla unveiled its second‑generation Roadster in October, but the reservation agreement it offers makes it clear that the car is still under development. In Section 4 of the agreement, Tesla writes that it cannot guarantee when a vehicle will be delivered or even if delivery will happen, effectively treating reservations as a place‑holding rather than a confirmed purchase. The company also states that the vehicle’s final specifications and price will remain subject to change, underscoring that buyers are not yet committed to a finished product.

Deposit and Delivery Uncertainty

Customers can pay a $250,000 deposit for the Rocket edition, which features SpaceX‑derived thrusters that would give the car extreme acceleration. Yet the reservation agreement explicitly says that final pricing, equipment and technical specifications remain subject to change, and it does not constitute a formal purchase. Buyers may cancel before a formal vehicle purchase agreement and receive a full refund. The reservation is also non‑transferable, but unlike some other Tesla special editions it does not carry resale restrictions.

Tesla estimates production will begin in 2028, a date that was highlighted by CEO Elon Musk during the launch event. However, the Roadster has already been delayed nine times since its 2017 announcement, and the company’s track record of postponed launches makes the 2028 target difficult to accept without skepticism. The performance claims—such as a 0‑60 mph time of 0.81 seconds—remain unverified until production models appear on the road.

Online commenters have expressed anger at the lack of delivery certainty. User ‘jrhmobile’ said, “This just gets better and better. This is nothing short of demanding an interest‑free loan. Or for you to literally sign your money away.” These remarks highlight the frustration among buyers who feel they are paying for an unconfirmed product.
