Tesla Changes Driving Feature Name in Europe After Regulator Pushback

The company is removing the Full Self-Driving label from its European sites following objections from German officials about misleading promises.

Visitors to Tesla’s European sales sites will no longer find the Full Self-Driving label. The feature now appears as Tesla Assisted Driving, following objections from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport. This change follows several weeks of negotiations between Tesla and German regulators.

The ministry’s position is that the technology doesn’t replace the driver. A person must keep watching the road throughout, so a name implying otherwise is misleading in its view. Regulators support wider European approval but wanted the name changed before moving ahead.

In the United States, the product is still sold as Full Self-Driving Supervised by subscription or as a one-time purchase. The ministry also reports that Tesla offered the new name for Europe only. The system already runs in several European countries under national approvals.

The EU’s Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles could extend approval further but its vote has been postponed until December. German officials want a rule capping speeds at roughly 10 percent above the posted limit instead of the current cushion. France has not signed off and intends to hold out until the EU decides as a bloc.

European software was adapted to comply with EU regulations rather than simply replicating the earlier version. Coverage of the Dutch-approved version says the Sloth-to-Mad-Max style profile sliders are replaced by a single maximum-speed setting. Core functions including lane changes, steering, braking and acceleration remain in place.

The renamed feature remains an SAE Level 2 feature which means the driver has to stay alert and be prepared to take control instantly. Anyone who mistakes the renamed feature for genuine autonomy is taking a real risk. This distinction matters because it defines legal responsibility on the road.
