Sweden’s government has banned civil servants from using the AI tools ChatGPT and Claude for official work. The decision followed an internal audit at the Swedish Transport Administration, which found cases of AI use described as “problematic.” Sensitive information entered into these unregulated platforms could be fed back to the developer and stored for training. Mikael Wettercrantz, chief information officer and director of digitization, warned that such use could have “consequences for Sweden’s information security.”

Ban details

Civil servants may still use Microsoft’s CoPilot, but with tighter security controls. A limited number of staff will keep access to ChatGPT and Claude through a “special platform for AI assistants” developed by Swedish authorities.

The ban also covers other agencies, including the Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care. The Swedish Enforcement Authority is currently reviewing the issue. Sweden had previously restricted the Chinese‑originated DeepSeek platform, and the United States recently announced a ban on all products and services linked to DeepSeek.

The ban targets what is known as shadow IT, meaning unregulated tools used by employees.
