Spotify announced that it has removed more than 50 million AI‑generated slop and spam tracks from users’ recommendations this year, a figure that builds on the more than 75 million spammy tracks it has already deleted from its catalog for repeated rule violations. The company said the purge follows a review of tracks listeners were skipping or flagging as unwanted, and that the removal has already led to a noticeable drop in complaints about unwanted content in recommendations.
How Spotify Detects AI Slop
Spotify’s approach to identifying slop and spam relies on multiple signals, including how listeners engage with a track, their feedback, upload patterns, metadata and the results of third‑party AI detection tools. The system also targets tactics such as mass uploads, duplicates, SEO manipulation, spammy playlist networks and artificially short tracks, and the company says it will keep updating its detection methods as spammers change their tactics.
Beyond filtering content, Spotify has rolled out several artist‑centric tools.
