Spotify has begun rolling out a new QR‑code verification process for its $21.99 Premium Family plan. The system may ask some members to scan a code that appears on the plan manager’s phone, giving them seven days to prove they live at the same address. If a member fails to scan the code in that window, Spotify will block them from joining another Family or Duo plan for a year.

Spotify co‑CEO Alex Norström described the change as a routine improvement to the way the company verifies its plans. He noted that the Premium Family plan has been around for about 12–13 years and represents a sizable portion of the service’s subscribers. The QR‑code check is part of a wider industry trend to curb unauthorized sharing of premium accounts.
