Siemens Healthineers announced it will stop selling general imaging ultrasound systems. The company will instead focus on ultrasound used in procedural imaging, such as in heart procedures. General ultrasound markets are already served by many established players, so the shift targets more specialized uses. Support for existing general ultrasound models—including maintenance, software updates and transducer parts—will continue. This change lets the company concentrate resources on increasingly complex procedures.
The company’s new focus is on systems used in interventional cardiology and electrophysiology. One key technology is intracardiac echocardiography, where an ultrasound‑tipped catheter is inserted into the heart for real‑time imaging. Siemens Healthineers will offer its Acuson Origin cardiovascular imaging platform, which received Food and Drug Administration clearance in 2024. The platform includes artificial‑intelligence tools that help with measurements and view recognition.
Siemens Healthineers will keep selling its Acuson Freestyle wireless ultrasound system and the P500 portable machine. These products remain part of the company’s general ultrasound lineup and will receive continued support.
This move is part of a broader strategy that began last year, aiming to use artificial intelligence and partnerships to address stroke, cancer, cardiovascular and neurovascular conditions. By combining imaging systems with software and collaborations with heart‑device makers, Siemens Healthineers intends to help physicians tackle increasingly complex procedures.
The company has announced it will discontinue sales of general ultrasound systems under the Acuson Sequoia, Redwood, Juniper and Maple brands. While these models will no longer be sold, existing customers will still receive maintenance, software updates and transducer supplies.
