A user of a Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro went to bed with the watch fully charged, only to wake up with a painful blister and a burn on the arm where the device had been. The watch had drained to a dead battery overnight, suggesting it was still active and generating heat. The skin damage was described as a blister and burn, and the user said the watch would no longer power on after the incident.

Incident details

The same user reported the issue on the Galaxy Watch subreddit, and other members of that community have noted similar overheating events. Several users have experienced the Watch 5 Pro or the Watch Ultra 2 overheating, with some describing blistering or burns rather than merely contact dermatitis. The reports also mention that the watches became completely dead by morning.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup has rarely shown overheating problems, and the company has not recorded widespread incidents. Nonetheless, reports of battery issues have appeared for other models, including the Galaxy Watch 8, the Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Ring. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro incident is the most severe among the recent complaints.

Earlier this year, a Samsung Galaxy S24 phone caught fire while in use, and a S25 Plus also experienced a similar battery-related combustion. Samsung reached out to the affected users and is investigating the incidents. These events highlight that battery overheating can occur across Samsung’s device range.
