The latest Stack Overflow Developer Survey found PostgreSQL remains the most favored database for developers, marking a fourth straight year at the top and a rise in favorability ratings. The rise of AI coding agents has injected fresh demand into PostgreSQL, which is now the default database for agent‑generated applications, according to pgEdge co‑founder Phillip Merrick, who said “Demand has skyrocketed.” Databricks reports that AI agents spin up 80 % of enterprise databases. PostgreSQL serves as a common foundation for building apps, retrieving information for language models and managing database sprawl, and its stability, performance and extensible architecture appeal to developers overwhelmed by new database designs.
Vendors such as pgEdge build on developers’ need to balance rapid experimentation with security, operational control and deployment flexibility. The company’s Starfleet platform aims to make applications easy to build and support reliably in production. Standardization can lower training and management overhead, but simplifying the technology portfolio does not simplify workload, so AI is also used to diagnose problems and propose repairs. pgEdge’s AI DBA Workbench monitors databases, identifies issues and generates SQL to address them with human approval. For example, it can troubleshoot a report whose runtime stretched from minutes to hours, and uses SafeSession technology to enforce read‑only access at the PostgreSQL engine level. Customers can prototype with StarFleet in pgEdge’s cloud and deploy the same PostgreSQL distribution in managed cloud, customer‑controlled cloud or on‑premises, accommodating data‑location constraints and the popularity of open‑source databases.
