Insiders say Sony’s next‑generation PlayStation 6 could require more than $680 per console just for its RAM and NAND flash storage. Kotaku notes that another insider estimates the memory cost could exceed $700, a figure that would push the console’s base price above the $1,000 threshold many expect for next‑gen hardware.

Industry expectations and pricing

The rise in memory and storage prices is driven by shortages created by the high demand from AI data centers. Consumer electronics prices have also climbed, with the PlayStation 5 now costing over 50 % more than at launch, a trend that has put pressure on Sony’s supply chain.

Industry analysts debate whether next‑gen consoles will retail for over $1,000. Joost van Dreunen, CEO of Aldora, warned that at current cost levels the next generation may not release until 2028 and that a price north of $1,000 would be the floor. Newzoo’s Manu Rosier said a base model could still stay under $999, but premium tiers could exceed that level.

Sony is aware of the high component costs and is exploring cross‑media development and live‑service revenue models to offset the higher bill. Analysts say a base PlayStation 6 could stay under $1,000 for marketing reasons, while premium versions might push the price above that mark.
