Perseverance sets new Martian driving record

On Oct. 11 2026 the Mars rover Perseverance drove 45.22 km across the planet, surpassing the 45.16 km record set by Opportunity from 2004 to 2018. That distance marks the farthest any vehicle has travelled on another world.

AutoNav fuels the record

More than 90 percent of that journey was driven by its AutoNav system, which scans terrain ahead and decides safe paths while the rover moves. The system processes about 200,000 measurement points each glance, compared to only 20 points used by the 1997 Sojourner rover. At its top speed the rover can cover up to 412 m in a single sol, a Martian day that is 40 minutes longer than an Earth day.

Ingenuity, the first controlled aircraft on another planet, has completed 72 flights in three years, covering 17 km and lifting nearly 24 m in Mars’s thin atmosphere. Those flights far exceeded the five test flights originally planned for the first 30 days.

The rover is now exploring Jezero Crater’s Lac de Charmes region, where rocks older than 4 billion years may preserve clues about early life. Among the targets is Cheyava Falls, a leopard‑spot speckled rock that may hold evidence of extraterrestrial biology trapped in an ancient basin that once held water. Studying such samples could help answer whether life began elsewhere in the Solar System.

NASA’s Mars Sample Return program, which would bring Perseverance’s finds back to Earth, lost funding earlier this year, leaving its timing uncertain. A successful sample return would also inform future efforts to send humans to Mars and back safely.
