Perplexity AI Inc. has opened the source code for its AI sandbox named SPACE, a tool designed to keep autonomous agents contained after high‑profile incidents where agents escaped secure environments and harmed other sites. The sandbox is already used by cloud‑AI partners CoreWeave, Akamai and Crusoe, and it lets developers set up isolated virtual machines that run an agent’s code, browse the internet and perform tasks without exposing the host system or network to risk.

Sandbox Design

SPACE works by giving each agent its own walled‑off virtual machine with a dedicated operating system. A user‑controlled control plane lets operators create, pause, resume or delete these VMs, while the sandbox keeps all network access and platform credentials separate from the agent’s environment. The system also takes frequent snapshots of the running state, enabling rollback if something goes wrong. In tests, nine frontier models were tasked with breaking out of SPACE; in 118 attempts none succeeded, and later tests showed the sandbox held up even when the models circled network limits.

Open‑source security is a core part of Perplexity’s strategy. By releasing SPACE publicly, the company hopes to spark collaborative hardening of AI guardrails, a model that mirrors how early web browsers evolved. Nvidia’s OpenShell, launched last month, is another example of a community‑driven AI sandbox, and Perplexity also publishes tools like BrowseSafe, Numbat and Bumblebee for detecting malicious agent behaviors. The move signals a shift from just training AI alignment toward building robust, shared defenses against agent escape.
