The Overwatch team introduced a new playable Hero during their annual convention in 2026. This character is named Doctrine and arrives as a free addition to the game.
Doctrine features a vampire theme and serves as a Support type of hero. He joins the roster after Blizzard waited over six years for a new playable character.
His arrival marks Season 5: Grim Doctrine within the current game cycle. This timing aligns with Halloween season which is currently underway for players.
The story behind him involves a rescue mission by a character named Doomfist. He was pulled from a volcanic prison located in Iceland before joining the fight.

Players can now visit this same prison location as a new map. It is the first Escort Map added to the game since Overwatch 2 launched.
Updates also affect how other characters function in this new season. Sombra has been changed to become a Support character instead of her previous role. Roadhog receives changes to his active abilities as well.
A seasonal event titled Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games is included in the update. Participants play as random Heroes and gain power each time they die in a match.
Collecting Offerings allows teams to summon the next Hero during these events. General quality-of-life improvements are also part of this release package.
