OpenAI has upgraded its medium-sized Terra model from GPT-5.6 to GPT-6.1, adding speed, stronger visual reasoning and clearer writing. The new version promises faster performance and better computer-based work, such as drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling in forms and editing videos. It sits between the cheaper Luna and the more powerful Sol and Astra models.

In internal tests, the error rate on low-effort prompts fell from 53.6% to 16.7%, a drop of nearly 37 percentage points. At maximum effort it fell by 18 points to 4.3%, nearly matching GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra costs 50% less than GPT-5.6 Terra, which makes it a good fit for automating computer work. The model is available today through ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API.

OpenAI's four main model classes, from lowest price and capability to highest, are Luna, Terra, Sol and Astra. GPT-6.1 Terra is the new medium tier and joins the lineup today.
