On October 20 2026, OpenAI announced the acquisition of the four‑year‑old AI biotech startup Orchestra Bio, a San Francisco company that had raised about $20 million in 2025 from Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

How Orchestra’s Platform Works

Orchestra builds AI agents that manage drug‑development workflows, tracking milestones, flagging problems and mapping how setbacks such as a failed manufacturing batch affect related activities. The agents gather relevant data, compare response options, and present the analysis to scientists and program leaders who make the final decisions.

OpenAI will integrate Orchestra’s team and technology into its Rosalind life‑science brand, which includes the GPT‑Rosalind model and the Rosalind Workbench. Benchmarks for GPT‑Rosalind show performance increases of 53.7 % on Genebench, 18.0 % on Medchem Bench, 19.6 % on Labworkbench and 4.42 % on LifeSci Bench.

The acquisition follows a trend of AI labs buying biotech companies to own the workflow behind new medicines. Anthropic purchased Coefficient Bio for roughly $400 million in April, and OpenAI has also acquired other science tools such as Torch and Crixet. OpenAI’s CFO has said the company expects future licensing, IP and outcome‑based pricing to share in the value created by these tools.
