Lando Norris was on course for sixth at the United States Grand Prix, but race control deleted his best lap after he was judged to have breached track limits in turn 15. The penalty dropped him two places to eighth on the grid.
Blames himself for poor qualifying
Norris blamed himself for the result. He described the McLaren as easily the hardest car he has ever driven in F1, saying it was quick but nasty to drive. He said it was still good enough for a second-place qualifying time, and he has faith in a good result in the race.
Team-mate Oscar Piastri said it was hard to get pace out of the McLaren. The team had made a few aerodynamic changes for the race, but Piastri said it had not expected any of them to make a massive difference.
Track limits were a big talking point in practice and qualifying, with several drivers falling foul of the white lines. McLaren had hoped its latest upgrade package would cut the gap to its rivals.
