Reports say Netflix fired its film chief Dan Lin over the weekend, but the company has not issued an official statement.
Lin had taken over Netflix's film division in April 2024, ending the auteur‑friendly era under Scott Stuber and shifting the studio toward mid‑budget, algorithm‑friendly projects that critics say lowered film quality.
Creative Clashes
The shift sparked tensions with high‑profile directors. David Fincher left a deal over a sequel to ‘The Further Mis‑Adventures of Cliff Booth’ after disputes about reshoots, Greta Gerwig clashed over ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ and Ben Affleck reportedly voiced strong dislike for Lin.
Netflix has also been dealing with a broader slump: first‑half engagement grew only 2 percent in 2026, the stock fell more than 40 percent since the failed Warner Bros. bid, and the company cut about 1,000 employees—roughly 6 percent of its workforce—in its largest round of layoffs since 2022.
In the wake of the shake‑up, chief content officer Bela Bajaria has also departed, and the studio has named Peter Rice—a former Fox Searchlight head—as its incoming chief content officer. Former Warner Bros. executives Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca are being considered to replace Lin, though they have asked for theatrical guarantees from co‑CEO Ted Sarandos.
