Microsoft announced it would no longer rent artificial intelligence infrastructure at Nscale Global Holdings Ltd.'s planned data‑center in Loughton, Essex, a move that could derail the company's U.S. initial public offering.

Power and construction setbacks

The Loughton project, already delayed by construction setbacks, now faces a power supply problem, with U.K. grid officials saying adequate electricity would not be available until the 2030s. Nscale's spokesperson said the relationship with Microsoft remains strong and that the cancellation would not affect other contracts, but the company also faces construction problems at its Norway facility, including cooling leaks and a fire.

Nscale had confidentially filed for an IPO under the ticker NSCL, hoping to raise $3 billion at a $35 billion valuation, but the loss of Microsoft, which accounts for about 85 % of its contract value along with Anthropic, has raised investor concerns. The company is one of several neoclouds that compete with hyperscalers, and the sector has seen funding worries, with CoreWeave shares falling 25 % after financing concerns.

The incident highlights broader worries about the AI infrastructure build‑out, as other firms like Firmus Technologies have abandoned IPO plans and Oracle sent a force‑majeure notice for a New Mexico facility. Microsoft also has a letter of intent for a West Virginia campus, but the Loughton cancellation underscores the challenges of securing power and financing for large‑scale data‑center projects.
