Microsoft has introduced its latest AI processor at an industry event in San Jose. The Azure Maia 300 joins the company's plan to reduce reliance on outside chip makers like Nvidia and AMD. This unveiling took place during the OCP Global Summit 2026 on Monday.
Microsoft claims the new chip offers better efficiency than current market leaders. The company said it provides 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems. This comparison serves as a direct critique of competitors using different technology.
Scaling up the hardware is a major focus for upcoming deployments. A rack containing 96 chips offers seven times the throughput of the existing Maia 200 model. The company expects these multigigawatt installations to begin next year.
The objective is to make these chips the main system for running AI tasks across their products. Microsoft stated this will establish Maia chips as the primary inference system for its services. This strategy aims to replace external processors with internal designs.
Previous versions of the hardware already support current workloads. The Maia 200 powers software like Microsoft 365 Copilot and Teams applications. It delivers 1.7 times more tokens per watt than other GPU-based systems for this use.
