Lucasfilm Eyes DICE, Bungie for Battlefront 3

The rumor originates from the Quartermann column in the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, cited by industry reporter Jeff Grubb on Giant Bomb. Grubb said Lucasfilm is actively looking for a development partner for a third Star Wars Battlefront. According to the column, the studio has sent out probe droids to studios to gauge interest. No developer has yet committed, so the project remains unannounced. The story is still a rumor, with no official confirmation from Lucasfilm or any studio.

Which Studios Are Involved

Two studios reportedly being considered are DICE and Bungie. DICE, owned by Electronic Arts, built the first two Battlefront titles and is known for large‑scale multiplayer. Bungie, owned by Sony, is famous for Halo, Destiny and Marathon, and has previously collaborated with Lucasfilm on Star Wars content in Destiny 2. Both studios bring experience in large science‑fiction shooters.

Battlefront 2 launched in 2017 with a controversial loot‑box system that drew widespread criticism and regulatory scrutiny. EA removed the system after backlash, and the game was rebuilt with free content updates until 2020. Since then, Battlefront 2 has maintained a dedicated player base, with a spike in Steam concurrent players in May 2026 before a slight decline. The franchise’s history shows both challenges and resilience.

Lucasfilm has broadened its developer outreach following the end of EA’s exclusivity in 2023. Vice‑president Douglas Reilly said the company no longer requires top‑five publishers to produce Star Wars games, though it still maintains high quality standards. Reilly highlighted the importance of major AAA releases like Battlefront for attracting a wide audience. He added that Lucasfilm is exploring projects with a range of partners to surprise fans. However, the rumor remains unconfirmed and the project has not been officially announced.
