Jules Rodriguez lost his voice as ALS progressed. He turned to artificial intelligence to create a digital copy of his own voice and speak again. The clone restored a key part of his identity.

AI makes realistic voices

In June 2024, Rodriguez recorded about 30 minutes of his speech for ElevenLabs. The AI system extracted his pitch, tone, breathing and stutter patterns. The resulting clone sounded almost identical, including natural breaths and pauses. When his wife first heard it, she cried.

The clone enabled Rodriguez to say things he had lost, such as telling his wife he loves her. He felt his voice returned, giving him a sense of continuity. The realistic voice also allowed him to pursue stand‑up comedy, something he had given up.

Bridging Voice, a nonprofit, helps ALS patients build voice clones. Some users have changed health directives after hearing their clones, and others have used them for wedding vows or to call grandchildren. The technology shows how identity can be preserved when speech is lost.
