Italian Foreign Ministry Website Attacked By Cyber Threats With No Service Disruption

The Italian government says its digital defenses stopped the breach without affecting public access to information.

On the morning of October 8, security teams at Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noticed unusual activity on their main website. Officials confirmed that automated systems caught the problem before it could block visitors from viewing the page.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said the ministry has strengthened its protection tools over recent months to handle such risks. He noted that experts continue to monitor the situation closely while other digital platforms are checked for similar issues.

Investigations are now expanding beyond Rome to include websites for Italian embassies and consulates located in other countries. These diplomatic offices serve as contact points for citizens abroad who need help with travel or legal matters.

The Italian government plans to work with Romania and fellow European Union members to identify those behind the intrusion. They aim to present proposals at upcoming meetings that would formally name the actors responsible for these digital actions.

This event follows a wave of similar incidents affecting other nations in Europe, including Spain and Norway this year. Officials also recall a recent large data access incident in Denmark involving nearly nine million people’s information.

Some experts suggest attackers use automated tools to gather information, while others note that past attempts often tried to flood servers rather than steal private files. Neither report confirms the specific method used in this current attack.

Similar disruptions have occurred at the same ministry in late 2024 and early 2025 during times of political importance. Experts warn that such actions are often meant to draw public attention rather than cause lasting damage to data systems.

The primary goal of officials is to ensure that diplomatic services remain open for people who rely on them. Keeping these channels secure prevents confusion and ensures help can be reached when needed during international events.
