Officials at the central civil registration registry in Denmark noticed a major security problem. The system stores core personal details about residents.
Someone gained unauthorized entry into the database. They did this by misusing the valid search access of a Danish business.
Through this breach, the intruders reached details belonging to about 8.8 million registered citizens.
The exposed records hold citizen names, street addresses, and unique personal identification numbers.
People who requested formal name and address protection were not affected. An internal review showed their contact details stayed hidden.
The system operators reacted by cutting off the business account that was used for the search.
Staff members are now working with security experts and state offices to map out what took place.
The registry reported the event to the national data protection body, and the police have started an investigation.
