Honda has added a new virtual gearbox feature to its upgraded Civic lineup. The S+ Shift system, first introduced on last year’s Prelude coupé, lets the hybrid hatch feel like it has an eight‑speed automatic. By simulating gear changes, the car feels more engaging for drivers who want a sportier drive.
The Civic does not have a conventional gearbox; it uses an e‑CVT that runs continuously. Honda’s software manages the engine’s RPM and power output to create the sensation of shifting. When drivers down‑shift, the car delivers engine braking and a brief throttle blip to match revs. An active sound control amplifies engine noise to reinforce the illusion.
S+ Shift is only available on the Sport and Advance trims. The Sport version starts at £34,530 and the Advance at £37,880. The base Elegance model does not include the feature. The Sport trim also adds red stitching, red dashboard trim and an upgraded 12‑speaker Bose system.
The hybrid powertrain remains unchanged. Honda says the hybrid powertrain will be the world's most efficient.
When S+ Shift is not active, the steering‑wheel paddles control the strength of regenerative braking. Drivers can therefore fine‑tune the braking feel while still enjoying the sportier feel of the virtual gearbox.
