Honda has given its next-generation technologies a new name: Honda Hybrid. This brand label replaces the e:HEV moniker used for electrified models in other markets. The automaker revealed in an Oct. 9 press release that fifteen new models will debut by March 2030.

This announcement supports a shift toward hybrids over electric vehicles. Earlier this year the company cancelled its 0 Series EV program to reallocate development resources. Plans include a significant reduction in EV investments and a focus on rebuilding the automotive business.

The new system includes a newly-developed electric all-wheel-drive option. It is built on a platform designed to offer reduced weight and better roadholding. Honda says the technology improves traction through a flexible body structure that allows more flex during cornering.

Reports indicate the system pairs two electric motors with the gas engine for most applications. Larger vehicles like the Pilot and Ridgeline may use an updated hybrid system connected to a V6 engine. This setup replaces the traditional automatic transmission found in current models.

Honda states the new gas-electric system provides improved full-throttle performance. One report claims an efficiency boost of up to 30% over non-hybrid V6s while another notes a target of 10% fuel economy improvement versus its current hybrid system.

The strategy builds on existing success in the brand's current hybrid lineup. Hybrid sales hit a new record for the quarter, led by the Honda CR-V Hybrid. This model now accounts for more than half of all Honda sales.
