Ambio, a Helsinki‑based startup, raised €5.1 million in a seed round to expand its end‑to‑end procurement solution for recycled plastics. The round was led by European venture firm b2venture, with participation from Montis VC and existing investor Lifeline Ventures. The funding will help the company grow its AI‑native platform across different polymer types and scale beyond Finland.

The platform uses verified material samples, quality documentation and transaction data to match industrial buyers with suitable recycled polymers. Ambio acts as a principal supplier, taking responsibility for quality assurance and coordinating the supply chain. By building a structured dataset that covers material properties, suppliers, pricing and transaction outcomes, the AI matching engine can improve recommendations and procurement execution over time.

The capital will support international expansion and the development of a pan‑European procurement and verification infrastructure. Ambio’s longer‑term ambition is to become a central marketplace for recycled plastics, using accumulated quality data and AI to make recycled materials as predictable to purchase as virgin plastics. The company plans to broaden its offering to more polymer types while strengthening European supply chains.

CEO Tommi Bergström said the main barrier to wider adoption of recycled plastics is trust, not regulation. He explained that buyers currently lack confidence because material performance can only be confirmed after production line testing. Ambio’s goal is to predict whether a material will work before sampling even happens, thereby improving the purchasing experience for manufacturers.

Investor Mathias Ockenfels of b2venture highlighted Ambio’s proprietary dataset, supplier model and AI engine as a competitive moat. He noted that the business builds trust by acting as a principal supplier and that the AI engine improves with each transaction. He believes Ambio will become the central marketplace for recycled plastics in Europe and beyond.

Ambio’s focus on reliability and data quality addresses a growing demand for recycled polymers driven by sustainability goals, regulatory requirements and customer expectations. The company’s approach aims to reduce dependence on imported fossil resources while giving manufacturers a predictable and cost‑effective alternative. By improving the reliability of recycled‑material procurement, Ambio hopes to accelerate the use of recycled plastics across European industry.
