Google Meet has added a new voice‑translation feature that works in 63 languages, using Google’s Gemini Live Translate model. The update began rolling out on October 22, 2026, and is available on the web, Android, and iOS. It lets meeting participants hear spoken words in the language they choose.
How it works
The system automatically detects the language being spoken and then translates it into the user’s selected language in near‑real‑time. Users can turn the feature on from a new toolbar button, pick the language they want to hear, and mark languages they already understand so those are not translated. The translated audio is accompanied by captions that sync with the speech.

Real‑time translation is a paid‑tier feature that requires a Google AI Pro, AI Ultra or an eligible Workspace plan. A meeting hosted by someone on an eligible plan unlocks the service for all participants, including guests from other domains. The amount of time you can use translation in a single meeting is limited to 90 minutes for basic plans and up to eight hours for the highest‑tier plans.
The feature works on Google Meet hardware in rooms: people in the room can hear translated speech from remote participants, but the room’s own speech is not translated for others. Translation is not available for live streams, recordings, dial‑in calls, third‑party interoperability, client‑side encrypted meetings or when adaptive audio is on. Some regional and age restrictions also apply.
To use the new tool, you must first update the Meet app to the latest build. After the update, a translation button appears in the meeting toolbar, and you can enable it during the call. The rollout began this week for some users and is expected to expand through early November, with administrators able to enable or disable it at the organizational level.
