Google rolled out a suite of AI‑powered scam defenses on Android on 14‑15 Oct 2026. The update adds an opt‑in Enhanced protection mode in Google Messages that sends chats with unknown senders to Gemini models in a private, encrypted cloud environment. Circle to Search lets users long‑press the home button or navigation bar, draw a circle around a message, and receive an AI‑generated overview with guidance and next steps, such as deleting or blocking the number.

How the new message protection works

The new protections are disabled by default, but users can enable them in Settings. When activated, the Gemini‑backed analysis flags suspected scam calls and texts each month, and Circle to Search gives a quick assessment based on scam patterns and web data, helping users decide whether to delete the message or block the sender.

Other parts of the rollout target calls and app behaviour. Android now verifies bank calls by checking with the bank’s own call centre and hangs up if the call is spoofed, a feature that has blocked over 3 million fake calls for Banco do Brasil and Itaú Unibanco. The system also stops apps from silently enabling call forwarding in the background and warns users before a typed forwarding code takes effect, and it hides login fields in Chrome during screen sharing.
