Fortnite has returned to Apple’s Australian App Store after a federal court ordered the company to open its iOS ecosystem to competition. The ruling requires Apple to allow third‑party app stores and alternative payment methods, and to remove barriers that previously forced developers to use Apple’s in‑app payment system. Epic Games said the move will benefit developers worldwide and iOS users in Australia who will gain an open mobile app ecosystem. The court also ordered Apple to pay 85 % of Epic’s legal costs and to implement the changes by March 1 2027, or provide proof of an extension by February 15 2027.

Apple has disputed many parts of the decision and plans to appeal. The company says it will seek a stay of the ruling while it reviews the legal findings and argues that it must protect intellectual property and the secure experience it offers. Apple is also required to comply with the order that developers can offer alternative payment systems without excessive fees and that the App Store cannot block developers from directing users to outside apps for purchases.

Fortnite was the only app left out of the worldwide return to the App Store in May because of the ongoing legal dispute over payment terms. Epic was waiting for a final court decision before restoring the game in Australia. The court’s order now takes effect immediately for Epic’s compliant submissions, while broader App Store changes remain scheduled for March 2027.
