Epic, the U.S. health‑IT leader, will launch a Prescription Marketplace tool that shows clinicians and patients a medication’s cash price at participating pharmacies and the cost under the patient’s insurance. More than 40 % of American adults skip or delay prescriptions because of cost, a survey found. Epic’s VP Joel Jones said that “cost‑driven non‑adherence is a clear problem” and that putting the lowest cost options into the workflow can help patients take their medicines. The tool builds on Epic’s real‑time benefit feature that saved patients over $250 million in 2025.

Partners and Price Sources

The tool pulls data from Amazon Pharmacy, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs, Costco and Eli Lilly’s LillyDirect. Epic said any pharmacy can share cash prices with health systems that use its EHR, letting doctors compare insurance and cash options before sending a prescription. “Customers deserve to know what their medications will cost and choose whether to use insurance or pay cash,” said Amazon Pharmacy’s Tanvi Patel. Mark Cuban added that a drug costing $500 under insurance but $100 cash should be known before the patient leaves.

By putting price data directly into the prescribing workflow, the Marketplace aims to cut the back‑and‑forth that patients, providers and pharmacists face when a medication isn’t filled. Epic said removing price surprises “will mean more informed choices and less back‑and‑forth.” If it works, the tool could improve adherence, lower pharmacy abandonment and help close the gap between quality and affordability in medication access.
