Epic Games chief Tim Sweeney slammed Steam's rule that makes game developers disclose their use of artificial intelligence, calling it "abhorrent". He posted the criticism on social media on October 23, 2026.

Steam requires developers to announce their use of AI when they put games on its storefront. Sweeney said that forcing developers to write a political statement could be used against them by a "hate mob".

Sweeney's criticism followed comments from an employee of a generative media company, who called AI disclosures "absurd" and "truly embarrassing" for Valve. Epic has been vocal about AI and earlier this month bragged about a "fully vibe-coded" storefront that it said was faster than Steam.

Epic also promoted the 2026 Epic AI MegaJam, an event with modest prizes. Its promotional image shows two hands offering red and blue pills, echoing The Matrix, with a six-fingered hand representing the AI side.
