Electronic Arts is reportedly developing a third Star Wars: Battlefront. According to a staff memo reported by Variety, DICE, which developed the previous two modern entries, and Respawn Entertainment, known for Titanfall and Apex Legends, are collaborating on a new project. Multiple sources identified it as Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
The Battlefront series began in 2004 as a first- and third-person shooter developed by Pandemic Studios. DICE rebooted the franchise in 2015 as a multiplayer-only title, and a sequel followed in 2017. That sequel drew criticism for its pay-to-win loot boxes, and DICE later overhauled the game's economy, removing loot boxes entirely, with the final update in 2020. In 2022, reports said EA had cancelled several Star Wars projects, including a follow-up to Battlefront II, and was focusing instead on Apex Legends and Battlefield.
The exact gameplay direction remains unconfirmed, and it is unclear whether the title will include a single-player campaign. There is no target release date yet. Given the backlash to earlier pay-to-win mechanics, one commentator expects the sequel to avoid them.
