At a gaming expo in Portland, an announcement was made about a classic game. EA producer Jim Vessella presented during a panel focused on preserving old assets. Both reports confirm the event took place at the expo hosted by the retro gaming community.
The project is a 30th anniversary edition of Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger. It will feature fully restored full-motion video sequences from the original tapes. This addresses long-held hopes that the footage might have been lost forever.
When released in 1994, the game was marketed as an interactive movie with over two hours of video. Technological limits meant the footage ran at 240p and was heavily compressed. Earlier ports on PS1 and 3DO did not improve the visual quality significantly.
The production featured well-known actors to boost its profile during that era. Mark Hamill played the protagonist alongside Malcolm McDowell and John Rhys-Davies in key roles. Kotaku notes that Tim Curry and Ginger Lynn Allen also performed in these live action sequences.

Vessella stated he has unearthed master tapes from the production for this project. Kotaku specifies that more than 600 source tapes were found within the EA archives during this search. The footage is being restored to present it in the highest quality possible.
The new version includes a frame rate boost of up to 60 frames per second for gameplay. An enhancement patch made with input from the fan community is also part of the update package. Reports differ on whether other games in the series are included in this release. One account notes it is unclear if the first two titles are being restored alongside the third game. Another suggests the integration refers to the initial trilogy, implying all three entries will be playable within the package.
The franchise remains a significant part of PC gaming history despite fading from recent attention. It spans five main entries, multiple expansions, and various media adaptations over several years. Some fans view the original design as the peak of the series compared to later installments.
EA is not typically known for prioritizing nostalgia projects compared to other publishers. Fans have historically had to request the return of franchises like Skate or Command & Conquer from the company. The original creator Chris Roberts has focused on the long development of Star Citizen for over a decade.
