Jay Clayton has been chosen by Donald Trump to lead federal policy on artificial intelligence from the White House, adding to his existing duties as the director of national intelligence. In his current intelligence post, Clayton oversees 18 agencies, building on a federal career that includes leading the Securities and Exchange Commission in Donald Trump's previous administration, as well as serving as Manhattan's chief federal prosecutor.

During his Senate confirmation proceedings for the intelligence position, Clayton described artificial intelligence as a significant shift that brings distinct hazards alongside its utility. The full scope of his new administrative responsibilities and how he will balance the White House technology portfolio with intelligence oversight remain unspecified in early disclosures.
