Denis Villeneuve, who directed the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049, has spent the past decade working on the Dune trilogy. Since the release of Blade Runner 2049, he has been locked into the Dune saga, with the third installment scheduled to open on December 18. After completing this epic sci‑fi series, Villeneuve will be leaving Arrakis behind for a new project: the first James Bond film of the Amazon MGM era, featuring a yet‑to‑be‑named actor in the role of 007.
Villeneuve’s rocket to Bond
Villeneuve said the Bond assignment feels like a ‘powerful rocket’ that will pull him away from the desert. He explained that after finishing the Dune trilogy he was tired and wanted a new creative challenge. In an interview with Empire he noted that shifting from sandworms to spies is his ideal situation, and that he intends to approach the new material with severity and avoid complacency.
While the Dune films are closely linked, Villeneuve teased that Part Three will be distinct from the earlier entries. He described a different pacing, an older Paul Atreides played by Timothée Chalamet, and a world whose psyches and perspective on reality have changed. The cast for the third film includes Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Isaach de Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Robert Pattinson, Anya Taylor‑Joy, Josh Brolin, and Javier Bardem.
