When the Complete Edition of Total War: Shogun 2 was released, it was quickly pulled from sale after players complained about poor visual quality, performance problems, and the use of AI‑upscaled art. Steam reviews and player reports highlighted glitches such as map clipping, siege pathfinding problems and audio sync issues. The backlash prompted Sega to withdraw the title from the storefront.

Creative Assembly acknowledged that the remaster was built by an external team and did not go through the studio’s internal review or quality assurance processes. Vice‑president Roger Collum said the studio had “taken our eyes off its external development” while other teams focused on new projects. He also admitted the game did not meet the studio’s own bar.

The company also addressed the use of generative AI in the remaster. Collum stated that Creative Assembly does not use AI to create game assets or artwork, and expects any partner to follow the same policy. AI tools are used to aid developers with tasks such as analysis, debugging and rapid prototyping. An investigation into why AI‑generated art ended up in the release is underway.

Addressing community concerns

Collum urged the community to avoid targeting individual team members and to direct criticism at leadership instead. He said harassment of employees will not be tolerated and that the safety of its people is a priority. The studio pledged to be transparent and to communicate progress as it works to fix the issues.

To address the problems, a small senior‑developer team has been assembled to work with Sega and the external developer on the next steps. The studio has not yet announced a timeline or specific fixes, but said it will provide another update when meaningful information is available.
