Citroën has unveiled a concept electric version of the classic 2CV. The company aims to bring the vehicle to market in 2028 for just €15,000. This price point targets buyers looking for an affordable entry into electric mobility.
For much of the second half of the 20th century, the Citroën 2CV held a special place in Europe. Known as Deux Chevaux or two horses, the vehicle ended production in 1990. It sold millions of units and remains popular among enthusiasts despite its age.
The new concept retains the general shape of the original but features a less jaunty cockpit. It has a taller and boxier front hood with much lower wheel arches than the vintage model. Roll-down windows replace the old pop-up style while a giant fabric roof remains openable.
Citroën is aiming to keep weight around 1,000kg which is lighter than many current vehicles. The new 2CV concept is in fact four inches shorter than the original Deux Chevaux. This small size helps keep the price down for the target market.
Expectations suggest the EV version will be more powerful than any 2CV ever but remain no speed demon. The original ranged from 9 to 29hp over its long production run due to a tax system formula. While suspension travel is much shorter on the concept, low wheel arches suggest pavement rather than off-roading design.
The interior appears cute but spartan with vibrant colors that may not reach production. Visible tech includes a small tablet-like screen attached to the steering column and a wide driver display. A removable radio module sits on the passenger side alongside storage cutouts for half-dozen eggs.
The car will sit between the 8hp Ami and 113hp C3 in terms of vehicle sizes. Similar small urban EVs typically have batteries around 30kWh offering roughly 250km of range. Citroën aims for a French answer to the Volkswagen Beetle that keeps costs down while maintaining quirkiness.
