Capcom pulls Street Fighter V offline over PHP issue

Online play is shut off while Capcom works on a fix, and the company has not said when those features will return.

Capcom announced on the official Street Fighter X account that the PS4 and Steam versions of Street Fighter V had been taken offline. Sales are being suspended in stages while emergency maintenance continues.

Online features disabled

The notice said all content requiring an online connection had been disabled, including ranked matches, casual lobbies and online hubs. Offline content, including single-player modes, remains playable.

The move follows two major PHP vulnerabilities that a group of cyber-security researchers and organisations found last week using AI. Capcom has confirmed the game is potentially vulnerable.

Released in February 2016, Street Fighter V has sold around 7.9 million copies, the best-selling entry in the series at the time. The game has had a rocky online history, including server problems that prompted a public apology from producer Yoshinori Ono, and an anti-cheat update that raised security concerns before it was rolled back.

Capcom has not given an estimated date for the return of online features. It has not confirmed whether player data was affected or whether the vulnerabilities were exploited. The Steam store page remains active and DLC can still be bought, though the main game is listed as "no longer available."
