BMW has introduced a new concept version of its flagship 7 Series, the 7 Protection, designed to shield occupants from handgun fire while keeping the car’s ordinary appearance. Unlike the heavier 7 Series Protection and X5 Protection models that guard against grenade blasts, the concept offers a more discreet level of armor suited to high‑profile private and corporate customers. It retains the 7 Series’ handling characteristics and luxury.
Design and Protection
The concept meets the new BayB standard and incorporates bullet‑proof glass and doors made from ballistic steel and fiber‑reinforced composites. The panoramic sunroof is fitted with a permanent sunblind that appears normal from outside but blocks ballistic threats from above. A bulkhead gives additional protection for the rear seats. Though it defends against .44 Magnum and 9 mm rounds, it does not withstand high‑powered blasts or semi‑automatic weapons that the heavier models can counter.
Inside, the car is finished in BMW Individual’s Smoke White Merino leather and M Anthracite Alcantara headliner, with electronic sunblinds and a digital rear‑view mirror. The concept also features an intercom and an attack alarm system, and a fold‑down rear console that can transform into a table with a cool box, adding utility for business or personal use. All these features are integrated without sacrificing the 7 Series’ comfort or performance.
Powering the concept is the M760e xDrive hybrid, a turbo‑charged 3.0‑liter inline‑six coupled with an electric motor that together deliver 603 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. BMW says the concept will enter production in the second half of 2027 as part of an expanded Protection portfolio aimed at new customer profiles. The company sees the model as a logical next step in providing tailored security solutions.
