BMW has begun series production of its sixth‑generation (Gen6) high‑voltage batteries in Shenyang, China, the third site in its global network after Debrecen in Hungary and Irlbach‑Straßkirchen in Germany. The new batteries will power future BMW Neue Klasse models built in China and help the automaker improve range, charging performance and production efficiency.

Technical Gains

Gen6 batteries bring several technical gains. The new cylindrical cells deliver more than 20 % higher energy density, and the cell‑to‑pack design can raise charging speed and driving range by up to 30 %. By embedding the cells directly into the battery housing, BMW uses space more efficiently and can adapt the pack to different vehicle models. A centrally developed Energy Master unit is also installed on the high‑voltage battery, combining power distribution and battery management for higher efficiency.

The production process blends precision engineering with automation and digital quality control. Cells are inspected, cleaned with lasers, welded into clusters, and then foamed into a single mechanical structure. The battery housing is sealed, riveted, and the Energy Master is installed before every unit undergoes comprehensive testing. Throughout the line, digital twins, data analytics and AI‑supported inspection systems monitor quality in real time, ensuring consistent performance across all sites.

Local Production Strategy

BMW’s strategy places battery production close to the vehicle assembly plants, which shortens transportation, supports supply‑chain stability and improves logistics. In addition to the European and Chinese sites, the company plans to open new battery‑assembly locations in Woodruff, United States, and San Luis Potosí, Mexico, while maintaining common production, quality and safety standards everywhere.

With Gen6 battery production now underway in China, Germany and Hungary, BMW is building a worldwide manufacturing network for its next‑generation electric vehicles. The higher energy density, faster charging and efficient packaging give future Neue Klasse models a competitive edge in a crowded market, while the localized production model strengthens the company’s supply‑chain resilience and scalability.
